IMPORTANT: NEW LPG CUSTOMERS.

Please note that we are unable to accept any new LPG customers at this time. This is due to a temporary  shortage of LPG bottles. We expect this to be resolved at the start of Feb 2025.

3G IS RETIRING.

GOODBYE, 3G.

At Mercury, our mobile services are delivered through the Spark Mobile Network. By the end of 2025, 3G will no longer be available; which means if your device relies on the 3G network, you will no longer be able to connect to the network for calls, texts, or data. This is part of a global move to improve technology and make sure everyone can access the fastest, most reliable service available.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

If you’re using a 3G network device
Your mobile services will stop working once 3G is shutdown. This includes calls, texts, and data usage.

Upgrade to 4G or 5G
To keep your mobile service running smoothly, you'll need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G-ready device. This will give you access to faster internet speeds and a more reliable network.

WHY UPGRADE NOW?
Better Coverage
You'll get improved network coverage across New Zealand - with Spark’s 4G network reaching around 99% of New Zealanders.
Faster Speeds
4G and 5G networks are transforming the way we connect, bringing you faster internet speeds that make downloading, streaming, and browsing a better experience.
Future-Proof Your Connection
4G and 5G networks offer a more reliable service, meaning smoother video streaming with less buffering and fewer dropped calls when you’re catching up with friends and family.

CHECK IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR MOBILE PHONE.

Not sure if your device is 4G ready? The models affected may vary, but you can check if your mobile is 4G-ready on Mercury’s Mobile network provider’s website

Have a question?

What is 3G? 3G, or "third generation," was one of the first mobile networks to support internet browsing and app use. It was a big step up from 2G, which mainly handled calls and texts.
Why is the 3G network being phased out? The 3G network is being phased out to make way for newer technologies like 4G and 5G, which offer faster speeds, better coverage, and a more reliable service. The current 3G network relies on limited radio frequencies, which are essential for the rollout of 5G, particularly in rural areas. So, just like many mobile network operators worldwide, Spark has decided to shut down its 3G network to concentrate on rolling out 5G coverage across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Phasing out 3G will improve mobile technology and ensure that customers get the best possible experience.
When will the 3G network be shut down? The 3G network will be phased out towards the end of 2025. After this date, 3G devices will no longer be able to connect to the network for calls, texts, or data.
What happens if I am still using a 3G device? If you're still using a 3G device after the shutdown date, you will no longer be able to make or receive calls, send texts, or use mobile data. To keep connected, you'll need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G-ready device.
What if I need to upgrade my device? There are plenty of 4G or 5G-ready devices available, head over to your local electronics store to explore your options.
What if I choose not to upgrade my device? If you choose not to upgrade, you will no longer be able to use your mobile services once 3G is phased out.
Will my mobile number stay the same if I upgrade my device? Yes, your number will remain the same when you upgrade to a 4G or 5G device.
I cannot afford to buy a new device but I want to stay connected, what are my options?

We understand that upgrading to a new device can be a significant expense. While we do not sell phones directly, there are a few options you can consider:

  • Mobile Device Promotions: Keep an eye out for special promotions or discounts from retailers that may help reduce the cost of upgrading.
  • Payment Plans: Some electronic retailers offer payment plans that allow you to spread the cost of a new device over time, making it more manageable.
What should I do if I’m a vulnerable person using a mobile device provided by Mercury? All of our Vulnerable Mobile devices support VoLTE and will work beyond the 3G Shutdown. These devices are reviewed on a regular basis and we will be in contact if your device needs to be replaced in the future.
I bought my phone overseas; will it work on 4G? As phones bought overseas or from local importers have different specifications, neither Mercury nor Spark can guarantee that it will work on the Spark network. If you can't connect your phone to 4G, try downloading the latest software update. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace it.
